Fed: Crean rejects death penalty polls
By Barbara Adam
MELBOURNE, Aug 19 AAP - Federal Opposition Leader Simon Crean today said the latestpublic opinion poll on the reintroduction of the death penalty in Australia would notchange his opposition to it.
Mr Crean said he was opposed to the death penalty last time the debate raged in Australiaand he was opposed to it now.
"I can understand how public opinion is reflected the way it has been in today's newspoll," Mr Crean told reporters outside the Triennial ACTU National Congress in Melbourne.
"Look at the question; it was specifically targeted to terrorism in the wake of theAmrozi sentence and I think that public opinion needs to be seen in that context.
"But I do not support the reintroduction of the death penalty in this country."
