NSW: Opposition promises rail safety ombudsman

SYDNEY, Jan 17 AAP - The NSW Opposition today announced moves it said would boost railsafety and improve accountability.

Opposition Leader John Brogden said he would appoint an independent Rail Safety Ombudsmanand an independent Rail Accident Investigation Panel.

"Instead of reporting to the (transport) minister and to the department, the Rail SafetyOmbudsman will report to the parliament," Mr Brogden told reporters.

The current Rail Accident Investigation Panel would also have the same status, he said.
