Vic: Australian aid organisations call for quake assistance

Australian aid organisations say emergency shelter, blankets and clean water are urgently
needed to assist victims of the earthquake-stricken Iranian city of Bam.

ROBYN KENNEDY of World Vision Australia says the most urgent needs are for shelter,
blankets, water purification units, jerrycans and hygiene kits.

She says more than 60 per cent of Bam has been levelled, it's freezing, and people
who are in desperate shock with severe injuries are having to spend the night outdoors.

She says the most recent estimates put the death toll from the quake at 25,000.

NATHAN RABE, of the Australian Red Cross's international operations, says the most
pressing needs are for shelter materials such as tents, blankets and plastic sheeting.
